Famous Dublin Movie Sites

If you are a movie fan, you should definitely visit the vast number of famous movie locations that Dublin has to offer. This guide to movie locations in and around Dublin features sites of scenes from movies such as “The Italian Job”,  “In The Name of The Father”, “Educating Rita”, “Circle of Friends”, “The Spy Who Came in From the Cold”, “Michael Collins”, “Braveheart” and the more recent  “Leap Year”.

When in Dublin, picture yourself as a young Micheal Caine, jump into an old mini and drive over to Kilmainham Gaol on Inchicore Road (1) as scenes from the 1969 classic “The Italian Job” starring Micheal Caine were shot here.

The jail, which now functions as a fascinating museum, also appeared in 1993’s “In The Name of The Father,” with Oscar winners Daniel Day-Lewis and Emma Thompson.

Have a stroll into town along the Liffey, take a left at Church Street and end up at the Observation Tower and the Old Jameson Whiskey Distillery (3), now renamed as Smithfield Plaza, where “The Spy Who Came in From the Cold” was shot. The 1965 Oscar-winning adaptation of the novel by John Le Carre starred Richard Burton as a Cold War-era British spy.

Move along the river to Trinity College (2) where a major part of the 1983 movie “Educating Rita” was shot, as well as scenes from Maeve Binchy’s movie adaptation “Circle of Friends” featuring Minnie Driver and Chris O’Donnell.

Now you are in the centre, you might as well catch up on your local history knowledge as several Dublin locations were used in the 1996 movie “Michael Collins,” the controversial depiction of the founding of the Irish Free State. Broadstone, a Northside inner-city neighborhood, was re-constructed as the city’s historic main thoroughfare, O’Connell Street (4). Nearby Dame Street (5), close to Trinity College, is also shown in "Michael Collins," as are Grafton Street (6), a major  shopping area, and the Georgian Fitzwilliam Square just south of the city centre. The dining room of the mayoral residence known as the Mansion House and the Members' Room in City Hall (7) also act as backdrops in the movie.

Now you’ve seen all the inner city sites, it’s time to move out of the centre and into the wild to experience Mel Gibson's 1995 epic "Braveheart" which was filmed at various locations just outside of Dublin. Some scenes were shot at Ardmore Studios (8), twelve miles south of the city. Closer to Dublin is Dunsoghly Castle (9), an architectural rarity in that its medieval roof is still in place. Other scenes in "Braveheart" were filmed in this fifteenth-century castle approximately two miles from Finglas in northern Dublin.

Trim Castle (10), dating back to the eleventh century, is featured as well. 28 miles northwest of Dublin, this medieval castle was also the backdrop for scenes in 1980's "The Big Red One," starring Lee Marvin.

More recently, "Leap Year" was filmed in Dublin. The 2010 romantic comedy starring Amy Adams and Matthew Goode, contains scenes shot at Dublin Castle. The former government seat dates back to the eighteenth century, but the site was previously occupied by another castle for several centuries.

So what are you waiting for, print out the maps below, walk the grounds the stars have thread upon before you, and have yourself a fully packed movie fanatic day in and around Dublin.
